Praise for the Geolo Team in Raisio, Finland: “The Collaboration Was Exactly What You Would Hope for from a Service Like This”

Sustera’s ground source heat pump solution, Geolo, improved conditions at the Tiedonpuisto School construction site and reduced its emissions. Geolo provided cooling during the summer as well as greater certainty regarding the schedule and material drying.

“Experience of using Geolo was extremely positive”

Tiedonpuisto School in Raisio was completed in 2025. The project management contractor is Rakennustoimisto Laamo Oy, which used Sustera’s Geolo solution for the first time during the project.

Laamo’s Site Manager, Toni Karppinen, was impressed by the good and consistent conditions that the Geolo energy station provided at the site throughout the year. The installation crews also praised the conditions.

“I had never previously experienced the conditions created by summer cooling on a construction site. Managing site conditions with Geolo, together with monitoring by a Sustera specialist, also gave us confidence in material drying and keeping to the schedule. Together, we identified the critical points in the schedule where conditions needed to remain continuously optimal for drying. Through reliable monitoring of drying conditions and the measures taken on site, we achieved the desired outcome,” says Karppinen.

According to Karppinen, continuous monitoring of site conditions and Sustera’s site visits also helped organise even challenging material handling routes without compromising drying conditions.

“Overall, our experience of using Geolo was extremely positive. Above all, the collaboration was exactly what you would hope for from a service like this. From a site manager’s perspective, nothing beats a partner with whom everything runs smoothly and exactly as agreed.”

A Small Carbon Footprint on Site

During the 13-month construction period, electricity consumption was approximately 55,000 kWh below the target. Compared with oil heating, CO₂ emissions were 744 tonnes lower. In addition to Geolo, the project’s thorough advance planning and the airtightness of the building envelope contributed to these results.

Mikko Rantanen, Building Services Engineer at the City of Raisio’s Facilities Services Department, points out that heating a construction site with an air source and ground source heat pump system improves its energy efficiency. It also reduces the project’s carbon footprint. As reable electricity was used at the Tiedonpuisto School construction site, the carbon footprint of heating remained exceptionally low.

“In addition, Geolo helped us adjust site conditions to optimise conditions for purposes such as structural drying. Heat distribution using air heaters supports the different stages of construction, and monitoring both the equipment and site conditions is easy,” says Rantanen.

Geolo was new to Rantanen.

“Overall, I was extremely satisfied with the system. We hope to continue using Geolo systems on construction sites in the future.”

Skilled Professionals Working Together

Tiedonpuisto School project is designed for pupils in Years 5–9. The school has a floor area of 11,000 square metres. Lukkaroinen Arkkitehdit Oy is responsible for the principal and architectural design, while A-insinöörit Rakennuttaminen Oy is acting as the client’s construction management consultant.

When the project began in 2023, Geolo was still a relatively new service. Tiedonpuisto School was the first project in Southwest Finland to use Geolo.

Janne Vanhanen, Managing Director of Sustera Climate Solutions Oy, thanks the City of Raisio and Rakennustoimisto Laamo for placing their trust in Geolo. He is already looking forward to continuing the collaboration on future projects.

“Working with the site team was exactly what collaboration should be at its best: positive and effortless. It is always a pleasure to work alongside skilled professionals,” says Vanhanen.
