Sustera’s New Climate Roadmap
Guiding Our Environmental Efforts for the Next Five Years.
Contents
Over the past year, Sustera has developed a new Climate Roadmap to guide our environmental efforts for the next five years. At the core of this roadmap are concrete actions aiming for continuous reduction of our carbon footprint and the achievement of our science-based targets. This target received an official validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in the fall. Additionally, the roadmap emphasizes increasing our carbon handprint, which focuses on enhancing the positive climate impact of our operations.
The Climate Roadmap is based on our carbon footprint calculations, which we have conducted in accordance with the GHG Protocol since 2020. Since 2022, our calculations have covered all operations, with 2022 serving as the baseline year for tracking annual emissions trends. The roadmap identifies four key emission sources: office energy consumption, business travel, employee commuting, and procurement.
Offices and Energy Consumption
By 2025, we will move to new, energy-efficient headquarters in Finland and Sweden. Over the next five years, all our properties will switch to renewable electricity, and we will explore the potential for green district heating and cooling based on local availability. We operate several smaller offices across Finland and Sweden, which will be evaluated for energy efficiency and comfort.
Sustainable Travel
This fall, we updated Sustera’s travel policy to promote more sustainable mobility. Our goal is to reduce flying and the use of combustion engine cars, while encouraging the use of public transport, trains, and electric vehicles. We already have two shared electric cars for employees in Finland, and in the future, our entire vehicle fleet will be electric. To support this transition, charging stations will be available at all office locations.
We encourage our staff to commute by public transport or bicycle. When selecting new office locations, we prioritize excellent public transport connections and provide well-equipped locker rooms and secure bike storage. The employee bike benefit introduced in Finland will also be extended to Sweden, along with a commuter ticket benefit.
Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Procurement
This year, we did in-depth analysis of the carbon footprint of our procurements. This work will continue next year with the development of a sustainable procurement policy and an environmental policy, as well as initiating discussions with service providers. By 2028, we will require that more than half of our service providers have set science-based climate targets.
Continuous Improvement at the Core
Alongside implementing concrete emission reduction measures, we will continue to enhance our data collection and calculation processes, as well as actively explore new initiatives. Our Climate Roadmap aligns with our sustainability strategy and the key areas identified in the double materiality assessment required by CSRD.
We have also actively collaborated with our clients on these themes, helping them to understand and reduce their carbon footprints. The new CSRD directive sets clear expectations for deeper sustainability efforts, which in turn require a more thorough examination of environmental impacts. If defining concrete actions feels challenging or you’re unsure where to begin, we’re here to help you to make your climate work straightforward and effective!
