State-of-the-art building conditions energy-efficiently for the Haso project with Geolo

The right-of-occupancy housing project being built in Oulunkylä, Helsinki, aims for at least a 70% reduction in purchased energy.

Utilizing Geothermal Energy – A Recommended Solution for Emission Reduction

A residential property of approximately 8,400 square meters is currently under construction in Oulunkylä, Helsinki, featuring 91 right-of-occupancy apartments. The HASO Maapadontie 9 project is being built for Helsinki Housing Production (ATT) by Jalon Uusimaa Oy.

The contract value is around 20 million euros, and the project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2025. During the construction phase, heating and cooling at the site have been implemented using geothermal energy with Sustera Climate Solutions’ Geolo system.

“Utilizing geothermal energy for climate control during construction is highly recommended for emission reduction and supports the city’s carbon neutrality goals. However, as the developer, we also want to hand over a system that remains as good as new, including the geothermal wells,” says Minna Launiainen, HVAC design manager for the City of Helsinki. She continues:

“Geolo is an excellent fit for this purpose, and we currently recommend contractors to use similar services in all applicable projects. In the future, such solutions will likely become a standard requirement and an everyday part of construction sites.”

Targeting at Least 70% Savings in Purchased Energy

The project’s construction-phase emission savings target is 358 tons of CO₂, equivalent to nearly 2.5 million kilometers driven by a passenger car. The site aims for at least a 70% reduction in purchased energy.

These savings are calculated by comparing Geolo’s sustainable geothermal energy use with conventional alternatives, such as oil or district heating.

“With Geolo’s heating and cooling, we provide top-tier drying and working conditions for the project. The CO₂ emission savings generated by Geolo during construction have a significant impact overall. Additionally, the financial savings are substantial, as the need for purchased energy is reduced to a fraction of conventional levels,” says Janne Vanhanen, CEO of Sustera Climate Solutions.

The building’s technical systems remain new for the client, and thanks to Geolo’s patented heat-charging technology, the geothermal field will be in excellent condition and ready for use after the construction phase.

The property, which can both heat and cool with geothermal energy as needed, will not only enhance living comfort for the future residents of Maapadontie 9 but also lead to significant savings in heating costs.
